The Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis) is a small and vocal mammal, native to Africa and the Middle East, whose closest living relatives are elephants and manatees.
They live wild in their colonies, using communal latrines generations in the making, inside deep crevices protected by the rock. Deposited here again and again, rich urine and feces first dries, then hardens, later petrifies and, centuries thereafter, finally fossilizes.
In time, the site abandoned, the colony moved along, collectors will come to mine the fossil from the rock. Raw harvest of this “Africa Stone,” in order to yield a workable material for the perfumer’s natural palette, then undergoes some method of extraction, whether it be with solvents (to produce an absolute), or macerated in alcohol (to create the kind of tincture one might expect from an apothecary).
The product as a result is, at first, overwhelming. It’s all tarred leather, scorched earth, and merciless, but it does—somehow alchemically—transform for hours on the skin to reveal such heated seduction as nothing before nor since. Fine tobacco facets and raw-dark-honeyed richness is its enticing signature.
Here is a natural musk which commands desire, the sexes. It is power, turns to gold. Most importantly, it is ethical. Vive la “Awawa!”

Signature scents are dead and gone.
Ambergris (a certain “Grey Amber,” from the French), is, at this point, so mythological that few seem to know what, really, it is, or from whence it comes, or, for that matter, how it gets inside a neat little bottle of perfume.
Deep inside the great Sperm Whale, there will, occasionally, come a time, when, having swallowed some sharp object, the creature will have to produce this fluid within, just to surround that sharp object, in order to protect the lining of its intestinal tract as the thing moves through the whale’s digestive system, until it can pass through as a sort of excrement which is not waste but indeed another marvelous secretion.
This grey mass of intestinal matter, which surrounded that sharp object to protect the whale inside, then floats slowly to the surface of the sea wide open, all the while undergoing a process of photoaging, or extrinsic aging, which are but a few of those terms which describe the transformation of an object being aged by the light of the sun.
Ambergris is rare. When found afloat the ocean or drifted its long journey to the shore, the material so prized for its olfactory complexity is tinctured, oft for ages, then the tincture, too, matured, until ready for use in a finer fragrance compound.
The real thing does smell fecal, certainly animalic, but in it one discovers a world of radiant ambers, deep enchanting musks: there’s must and timeless woods; solar tobacco marine sea salt metallic mineral.

The floral needs some muscle, the berry needs its skin; vanilla gets its kinky back and cowpoke’s on the saddle again. Castoreum delivers the gravitas, the feel of something real. The Wild Civet Cat does know a tortured history within the Fragrance Industry. While most Civet products available on the market do raise their ethical questions, I am proud to source my Civet Absolute from a trusted supplier in New Zealand, where pure and natural Abyssinian Civet Absolute is obtained within CITES guidelines for Appendix II ranched animals.
Civet Absolute is itself so quite transformational that what was once so fecal, really putrid, becomes, with great dilution, as much something sublime. Incorporated into the fragrance compound at or below just one percent, Civet Absolute breathes real life into more opulent floral bouquets, imparting a sense of naturalness impossible to achieve by any other means.
